Four-wheeler insurance comes to your rescue if you ever find yourself in an accident or if your vehicle gets damaged or lost. While you should buy third party limited liability insurance, which is mandatory under the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, it is better to opt for a comprehensive one with the necessary add-on riders for getting full coverage. Also, you need to know about the documentation process for buying car insurance.
Documents required
Today, you can buy your car insurance online or through agents. Irrespective of the method you use to buy the policy, you must submit the same documents. The following are the documents needed for buying one:
Policy form
You need to provide a duly filled form to buy a car insurance policy which includes personal details such as name, address, and contact details. Also, mention your birth date and gender. Moreover, enter your vehicle details like registration number, make, model, year of buying, chassis number, and the application form’s driving license registration number.
Two recent passport size photographs
You must give two recent passport size photographs. If you opt to buy online car insurance, scan your passport size photograph, and attach it with the other documents.
ID proofs
Provide a photocopy of anyone ID proof document from the approved list. Acceptable ID proof involves your PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Driving License, Voter ID, Passport, or any other government-approved paper featuring your photo.
Address proofs
Also, provide a copy of any of the address proofs document from the approved list. Acceptable documents include your Aadhaar Card, Ration card, utility bills, insurance papers, or any other government-issued address proof document.
Photocopy of your driving license
Your driving license is one of the essential car policy documents, without which your insurance request might get rejected. You should compulsorily give a copy of your driving license. Since your driving license contains both your photograph and address, you can submit it as both address and ID proof document.
Vehicle registration documents
Offer all the documents related to your vehicle registration that your four-wheeler’s RC book. When you buy a new vehicle, the dealership registers it with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for paying the mandatory road taxes, after which your vehicle registration number gets assigned. Typically, the RC book is a green leaflet or a smart card. RC book is also the most crucial insurance document.
Bank details
You must submit a cheque to pay for the insurance premium. If you buy car insurance online, you can use banking methods such as net banking, credit, debit card, or digital wallets to buy the policy.
If you buy your insurance policy through an agent, provide photocopies of the mentioned documents. If you decide to buy them online, scan these documents along with the insurance application form. There is no need for physical copies if you opt for the online method. Also, note that the documents required at the time of buying are the same as those needed when you do car insurance renewal.
